Olympic skateboarding buzz in Luzerne County

As all eyes are on the world stage for the Olympics people in our area who enjoy the same sports are getting excited to watch the games.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — Filled with bikes, skateboards, and scooters, the skatepark at Hollenback Park in the city of Wilkes-Barre is a favorite spot to ride.

"I feel good; every day on my board is a good day," said Brady Kaushas.

With the Olympic games underway in Paris, people in our area are ready to watch the pros for Matt Larue of Ransom; it's all about the BMX, "That is a huge spot for us because we race right over the hill in Ransom, so we follow it pretty well."

There, Newswatch 16 found lots of long-time skaters, but also some people new to the sport, young riders like 12-year-old Brady Kaushas and Vinny Wallace of Pittston, say they're excited to see their favorite sport of skateboarding on the world stage.

"I'm looking forward to seeing the street competitions and all of that," said Kaushas.

"I watch skate videos and the Olympics a little bit; it inspired me to start skateboarding," said Vinny Wallace.

The skatepark in Wilkes-Barre is just a few days away from its one-year anniversary of being open… people who come here often to ride say the skating community is one of a kind.

"It's awesome because it is a sport even 70-year-olds still do, on the racing aspect of it I've seen 72 year olds race before and it is neat to pass the knowledge down to the younger riders to," said Larue.

"It really inspires me, and it's really cool; I like the way it looks, and I like that skateboarding is in the Olympics and BMX'ing," added Vinny.
