KINGSTON -- The family of Corrections Officer Kris Moules told us they know very little about what happened in that jail and were just too heartbroken to say anything more.
Moules and an inmate at the Luzerne County Prison died after a fall into an elevator shaft during a scuffle Monday night.
We spoke to another family of Officer Kris Moules: his Spartan family at Wyoming Valley West where he went to high school.
As authorities in Luzerne County try to piece together what led to the death of a corrections officer and an inmate at the county jail, those who knew the fallen officer are picking up the pieces of their broken hearts.
"It's really hit's close to home when his whole family was a Valley West family," said Wyoming Valley West Principal David Novrocki.
Novrocki was the assistant principal seven years ago when Kris Moules roamed the halls of Wyoming Valley West High School.
Moules' parents were both teachers in the district and he was a star athlete.
The 2009 yearbook is filled with photos of him as a senior -- his highlights from the soccer field and as a Spartan baseball player who helped lead the team to a division title.
Novrocki recently got caught up with Moules at a high school basketball game. They talked about Moules' relatively new job as a corrections officer in Luzerne County.
"He had all positive and enthusiastic ways of looking at it and approaching it, just like he did as a student here. Unfortunately, this is just a horrible situation."
It certainly shocked Novrocki and the district to hear the 25-year-old corrections officer, their former star athlete died during an altercation and struggle with an inmate.
"It was certainly a young life, tragically lost but we have so many good memories of him to sustain us," said Superintendent Irvin Deremer.
The school district says the fallen corrections officer, his parents, and his brother gave so much to the district. They were all always there when anyone needed them, so during this difficult time, the entire Wyoming Valley West community will be there for the Moules family.
