First EV charging station in Pennsylvania funded by federal program installed in Pittston Township

Four spots to charge electric vehicles are online at the Pilot Travel Center on Route 315.

PITTSTON TOWNSHIP, PA — Four places to charge electric vehicles are now available at the Pilot Travel Center on Route 315 in Pittston Township, thanks to more than $610,000 in federal funding,

Newswatch 16 found electric vehicle driver Griffey March using a charging station in Moosic. He's in town from Washington State.

"There's a lot more chargers over there," March joked.

March says there are fewer EV charging options in our area.

"Compared to Allentown, closer to Philly, there's a lot more," March said. "Here, there's two."

That means coming to northeastern Pennsylvania creates some stress for electric vehicle drivers.

"Anywhere where there'll be more chargers, specifically out here and like Scranton, would be great because you kind of have to drive pretty far. You lose battery just to charge," said March.

Thanks to the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, funded by the federal Bipartisan Infrastructure Law and administered by PennDOT, 56 new charging stations are being built across the Commonwealth. The program involves over $35 million in federal investment in EV infrastructure.

"The more, the better, specifically for the Teslas, because the superchargers only take 30 minutes. So, if you can kind of have more around, you don't need to kind of necessarily plan, charge less," added March.

Thanks to the NEVI program, you'll soon see electric vehicle charging stations elsewhere in Luzerne County and in Columbia, Lackawanna, Monroe, Northumberland, Pike, Schuylkill, and Susquehanna Counties.
