NANTICOKE, Pa. — Skycam 16 shows us how busy the Nanticoke/West Nanticoke Bridge can be around noon, making some drivers feel lucky they don't have to use it.
"It's over 100 years old. I imagine it does need something. It shakes. I know that when you sit on it," Jim Sikorski said. "I guess it's a little scary, probably needs to be redone."
The plaque on the bridge says it was reconstructed in 1987, but now the county says it's getting word from an engineering firm that it's again time for some TLC.
The engineering firm says, "The bridge is considered fracture-critical, structurally deficient."
The span has a 15-ton weight limit.
The county says there is no timeline on when the bridge could be deemed unsafe and closed. To prevent that, the engineering firm gave the county three recommendations ranging from $39 million to $64 million.
Two options suggest rehabilitating the bridge, and one option recommends replacing it.
The decision will be left up to the county council in the coming weeks on how to move forward.
