Nanticoke-West Nanticoke Bridge closed for inspection

Drivers hope the plans following the inspection prioritize safety over speed.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — Despite its appearance, recent weight restrictions, inspections, and county discussions about replacing the Nanticoke West Nanticoke Bridge, some drivers say it's not one of their top concerns while driving through this part of Luzerne County.

"Right now, as it stands, not for these vehicles, no, maybe some of the larger trucks and stone carrying trucks and stuff, but these little guys, then again, I could be wrong, you know," said Mike Chapin of Hunlock Creek.

The bridge will be closed from 7 a.m. to 6 p.m. through Wednesday for an inspection.

" I had to go around on to 29 and then make that loop," said Heather Lasco of Hunlock Creek.

Both businesses and drivers here in Nanticoke tell, Newswatch 16, they are anxiously awaiting the results of this inspection.

"Yeah, yeah, I could see, like, smaller businesses here really rely on that," said Lasco.

Especially if the findings mean the bridge closes for an extended period or permanently.

"It's gonna hurt that service station. It's gonna hurt Stell," added Chapin.

However, drivers agree that no matter the findings, the priority should be safety over speed.

"I hope that the inspection goes through good, obviously, like, if there's major issues, we want it repaired, and hopefully in a quick manner, but I would want it open. It's definitely a central part. A lot of people use this bridge every day," said Lasco.

"If there's something, I hope they find it. I can't say what it would be, but a structural crack or too much rust, or gussets missing. But if there's something, there. I hope they give it a good look at," said Chapin.

PennDOT says it is assisting with the bridge's inspection, but decisions on what to do with those results will be up to the county.
