LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — Preparation is key at Konoponski Power Equipment in the Back Mountain. On Thursday, crews were installing temporary walls around the store and along Toby Creek. The business is not taking any chances after being hit in 2006 and having a close call again in 2011.
They're not the only ones monitoring the water levels closely. Luzerne County Emergency Management Agency officials are already preparing for tropical storm Debby.
"The rain is going to come fast and going to come hard tomorrow. So, we are looking at the local tributaries- the creeks that feed into the Susquehanna- and we're going to monitor the height of the Susquehanna, as well," said Dave Elmore, Luzerne County EMA deputy director.
The agency's biggest concern is flash flooding throughout the county.
"With flash flooding, it can occur very fast, rapidly. And you may not have an opportunity to actually continue your travels safely. So, it would be important that you do not enter water on a road- at all," said Elmore.
Over in Plymouth, vendors are taking advantage of dry skies to set up for tomorrow's Kielbasa Fest. Organizers are preparing for the possibility of a wet start to the weekend.
"We are going to be selling ponchos, we're telling everyone, bring an umbrella," said Alexis Eroh, the Plymouth Alive President.
Despite the rainy forecast, the show will go on as planned in Plymouth. They say, the food will taste just as good, rain or shine.
"I think by tomorrow evening it looks like, if Joe's [Snedeker] right, we might have a really nice evening once the storm clears out of the way," added Eroh.
Meanwhile, County officials say they will remain in contact with the National Weather Service about the path of this storm and the potential impacts it could bring to residents within Luzerne County.
