Luzerne County flower shops combat cold weather

Easter is coming a little early this year, and it's not just throwing off the Easter Bunny's schedule.

FORTY FORT, Pa. — Easter is coming a little early this year, and it's not just throwing off the Easter Bunny's schedule.

It's not usually the time of year where the flower tents are in full bloom. Haley Sipple works at the Flower Tent in Forty-Fort.

"It's been a little challenging just because of the weather," said Sipple.

Floral-filled stands are popping up a little sooner than usual this year, including the one in Forty-Fort, all because of the early Easter. Despite the cold, people are still coming out to get their pick.

"Everyone loves tulips. We have a huge variety and they do really nice with the different colors and the different varieties of them," added Sipple.

Preparations for the early Easter started in January over at Graziano's Greenhouse in Hanover Township. But, the owners have it down pat, as they've been operating for more than 40 years.

"Down here, they're always ready for it. This is the best. I remember when the mother was here.. this place has been here for a long time," said customer Bill Kunec of Hanover Township.

Year after year, customers are checking off their last-minute shopping lists ahead of the holiday.

"I am buying easter crosses for the deceased members of my family, and I like to look at the flowers, and I'm out doing last-minute shopping," said Kelly Thomas of Pringle.

Graziano says the colder weather brings its own set of challenges. It's more costly because they need heat to keep the flowers alive.

Whereas at the flower tents, operations will be shutting down between Easter and Mother's Day due to the time between the two holidays and the weather.

"Last year we were able to stay open, but we have the flowers coming though... we'll be ready for it. Hopefully, the weather lasts," said Sipple.
