Luzerne County farm overflowing with potatoes, fall harvest after a great growing season

This autumn, it's not just about the pumpkins; it's actually the potatoes that are perfect for picking.

PLAINS, Pa. — The crisp October weather has people flocking for fall foliage, flowers, and pumpkins, but one place in Luzerne County is overflowing with produce and doesn't know where to put them all.

"I couldn't find mums anywhere, so I stopped to pick up a mum," said Linda Gilroy of West Pittston.

But this autumn, it's not just about the pumpkins; the potatoes are perfect for picking.

"Potatoes like it moist and dry at the same time, so what happened was we got the rain that we needed, and it dried out," said O'Malia's greenhouse manager, Dominic Tifani.

There are so many, in fact, that the farmers at Larry O'Malia's Farm and Greenhouse in Plains don't know what to do with them.

"We have about six or seven short pumpkin bins, which equals about 900 pounds per bin. We have so much of it we actually reduced everything. Bags were $25, it went to $20 just to help us get rid of it since," said Tifani.

It's not just good for growing potatoes but also tomatoes.

"In one week alone, we picked 185 baskets of tomatoes. That was from one field!" added Tifani.

Even in late October, customers are still stocking up on the juicy summer staple.

"I was getting some canning tomatoes. I was surprised they had it this late in the season. It's fantastic. I'm an urban gardener. I live in the city, so I have to come here when my tomatoes are done at home so I can make tomato juice," said Catherine Kessler of Wilkes-Barre.

Thanks to enough rain and plenty of sunshine, it's a fall abundance.

"Cabbage, winter cabbage, potatoes, red beets, tomatoes, we got piles," said Tifani.

While most customers are focused on fall, O'Malias is already looking toward the Christmas season. They will soon be prepping winter blankets, logs, and hanging baskets. Making the switch from potatoes to poinsettias.

"They're doing very good. They're right on schedule. Some a little bit behind, as long as we get sunny days it helps us out," added the manager.

O'Malia's will close on November 2nd and reopen the week of Thanksgiving, November 25th.
