EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. — Police in Luzerne County arrested a 17-year-old and accused him of firing a gun into an apartment building earlier this year in Edwardsville. The bullet did not strike anyone but did hit a couch where a family was sitting.
The teenager, who is charged as an adult, was identified by borough police this week as Jovan Goodwin, of Hanover Township. No one was hurt in the January 24 incident.
Police say Goodwin pointed a pistol at someone and squeezed off a round shortly after 4 p.m. that day. He missed.
The bullet flew into a building in the Hilltop Apartments complex on Roosevelt Street. It struck a couch where a mother sat with her 8-month-old child while watching her two young daughters play on the floor, police say.
She told the police she heard a loud noise and saw smoke inside her apartment. Initially, she thought she had an issue with her residence's heating system. A bullet hole in the wall suggested otherwise.
Security cameras captured the suspected shooter's license plate, which gave the police Goodwin’s name. The investigators confirmed it was him by comparing images of his face captured by surveillance cameras with photos from his driver’s license and social media pages.
The police charged Goodwin with offenses included aggravated assault, illegally carrying a firearm and several counts of recklessly endangering another person. A judge set his bail at $100,000 and scheduled a preliminary hearing for May 14.
Goodwin's court docket on Wednesday did not list an attorney assigned to represent him.
