Luzerne County business puts an Irish twist on a Polish tradition

A pinch on St. Patrick's Day is a sign of good luck, but a business in Luzerne County is taking pinching to a whole new level this holiday weekend.

NANTICOKE, Pa. — Just about everything is going green this St. Patrick's Day, including the most polish of traditions. Jasmyne Morgans is rolling out the green dough ahead of the holiday weekend.

"I mean, have you ever seen green dough before? It has to be the luck of the Irish," said Morgans.

NEPA'Rogi in Nanticoke is pinching its way through this Irish holiday. Owner Lauren Gorney says they're taking the pinching to a whole new level.

"Pinching on St. Patrick's Day is a sign of good luck. But what we say is 'pinch me I'm polish' or 'pinch me I'm pierogi,'" said Gorney.

The NEPA'rogi staff is doing a whole lot of it. They're rolling out more than 150 pounds of dough, each day. They're doubling that number with it being the Lenten season.

"We pinch over 2,000 pierogi daily. And we'll double that for Holy Week. So about 4,000 pierogies daily," added Gorney.

But you have to have a place to put all that pierogi. That's why Gorney is setting up shop in a new storefront along South Market Street in Nanticoke. The new location is ten times the size of the old one. For this Glen Lyon native, the spot is close to her heart.

"My roots, ancestors, the culture that grew up with here. I went from kindergarten to college here on the same road, and I'm really proud to be a part of our community," said Gorney.

The bigger space, allows for new items on the menu.

"He one new piece is that we have fresh pinched pierogi, so customers can buy on the daily whatever fresh pierogi we're making and they've never been frozen," added the owner.

So, whether you like them boiled, fried, or even green.

"It's funny when I say, 'Oh, you want the potato and cheddar—do you want the regular or green?' and they say, 'Green?' and I say, 'Yeah, it's St. Patrick's Day, you might as well,'" said Morgans.

Irish or not, everyone can be a wee bit lucky with a pierogi on their plate this holiday weekend.
