Local store's 'Giving Trees' spread holiday cheer to veterans and children in need

The store in downtown Wilkes-Barre is partnering with community groups to provide gifts for veterans and children in need.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Ornaments, Christmas trees, and holiday yard decorations fill the second floor of Boscov's in downtown Wilkes-Barre.

While characters and candies cover some of the trees on display, there are people in the community who are the focus of others.

"The tree benefits all our patients at the VA Medical Center in Wilkes Barre," explained Martine Columbo, the Post Commander for the American Legion Post 781 in Mountain Top.

She is working with Boscov's to make sure those veterans have presents to open this Christmas.

"It means a great deal. The Veterans gave part of their life for our freedom, and this is just a payback. Saying you're not, you're not forgotten," added Columbo.

Anyone interested in purchasing an item off of a giving tree can take the tag and the item to the courtesy desk on the 4th floor, and employees and volunteers will take it from there.

"It is super easy. I love Boscov's. All I have to do is make a phone call saying I'm ready to put up the tags, and they put up the tree for me," said Columbo.

The same goes for another tree on display in the Boscov's basement level. This tree is an Angel Tree that benefits children in need in our area.

Any questions? Folks at the courtesy desk at Boscov's in Wilkes-Barre are happy to help.
