WILKES-BARRE -- The Wilkes-Barre Farmers Market kicked off Thursday, and hundreds of people turned out on Public Square to stock up on fruits and veggies.
It's the 43rd year of the market and many of the stands are longtime sellers, like Darling's Farm in Plains Township.
"This is the only market we go to," said Mary Darling. "The people are very nice, it's very nice. We like it."
They have some fresh eats you may not be able to get in grocery stores.
"I got purple kohlrabi. It's going to be fresh here, it's quality," said Mark Dimirco of Wilkes-Barre.
Something people who attend farmers markets may not realize is that senior centers offer $20 in vouchers to seniors who meet certain qualifications.
"It benefits the seniors as well as the farmers because it puts money into the economy with the farmers," said Toni Mathis, Wilkes-Barre Senior Center.
Mary Dippolito makes sure to take advantage of the offer every summer.
"It's been like that for years and this year, it's a little early with the vegetables because we have some nice warm weather."
Dippolito is such a regular at the market, there are some people who come to see her. She gives out handmade flags to every veteran she sees.
"I tell them thank you for serving and I present them with the flag, and I make them just for my vets."
The Wilkes-Barre Farmers Market runs every Thursday through November.
And organizers this year say it's not just about the produce.
