History-filled home run derby in Luzerne County

The inaugural Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby was held in Kirby Park, near where Babe Ruth hit a 650-foot home run in 1926.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — Folks gathered at Kirby Park in Wilkes-Barre on Saturday to compete in the inaugural Babe Ruth Sultan of Swat Home Run Derby.

Organizers say it's near the exact spot where Babe Ruth hit a 650-foot home run in 1926, and some also say it is the longest-recorded home run in baseball history.

Kegan Laman of Dickson City says, “That's awesome knowing a Hall of Famer was playing on that field over there and hit the ball right behind this one. That's an incredible feeling.”

The person who hit the furthest ball in each derby was awarded the Bambino trophy.

The winners of the women's and men's derbies were presented with a Sultan of Swat trophy in Luzerne County.
