Health officials urge syphilis testing

State health officials gathered in Luzerne County Monday to urge pregnant women to get tested for syphilis as newborn cases rise across the country.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — Newborn syphilis occurs when a pregnant woman with syphilis passes the infection onto a baby during pregnancy.

Pennsylvania's acting health secretary visited the Kirby Health Center in Wilkes-Barre Monday to highlight the importance of awareness.

"Syphilis is not located in just one county, it's across the entire commonwealth, and we want everyone across the commonwealth to be aware and know that they can get tested and treated," said Dr. Debra Bogen, Acting PA Health Secretary.

Pennsylvania has confirmed 31 infants with newborn syphilis so far this year.

In 1990, 17 infant cases were reported for the whole year.
