Exploring art in nature and on canvas

Newswatch 16's Valeria Quinones spoke to students who say art is more than just a canvas and a paintbrush.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — For almost eight weeks, kids at the Hazleton Art League's summer camp have been exploring all different types of art.

"Summer art camp isn't just about art.  It's art, but it's basically how you spend time with it." said Michael Velotta, a Summer Art Camp student.

And these past few weeks, they have been spending all of their time learning about different art mediums, artists themselves and ways of expression through art.

"I've done a lot of fun stuff. It's not just about art. It's about music. Music is art. Everything could be art." said Rolan Tulsily, another Summer Art Camp student.

And everything is art for these campers. This week, they set out to Nescopeck state Park near Drums to explore the outdoors.

"We found um cool leaves and flowers." said camper Penelope Plesh.

And their focus in the studio was perspective and detail.

They were able to look at the details of things they found under a microscope and eventually created art from those very things they found in nature.

And not just cool leaves were drawn. Students had all the creative freedom to create art that resonates with them.

"Well this, we were just doing this yesterday. This is like for perspective and like, but then you know. I just started to do like my own thing." said camper Aurora Houseknecht.

Some of the art the students made, will be displayed right here in the Hazleton Art League.

"So, we've gone through, this is our 7th week, and the difference between the first week and the seventh week has been enormous." said Joni Troyanoski, Summer Art Camp Director.

The Summer Art Camp students will exhibit their art Friday august 16th at 4pm.
