Halloween House spreads joy in Luzerne County

A home in Mountain Top transforms itself annually into a Halloween haunt for families to enjoy for free.

MOUNTAIN TOP, Pa. — For George Houseknecht and his wife, Brooke, it all started with a single statue. Their Mountain Top home is now transformed into a Halloween haunt until the first week of November.

"We love all holidays, but especially Halloween and Christmas. So we thought it's time to start living, let's have some fun," said George Houseknecht.

Their display quickly became larger than life, with hundreds of devilish decorations in just the past three years. It takes about a month to install, and if he can't find exactly what he's looking for, he'll get creative and make a decoration himself.

While it's spooky enough during the day, this yard truly comes to life in all its ghoulish glory once the sun sets. Creating a Halloween hotspot on Yorktown Road in this usually quiet Wright Township community.

"This place, it's nuts. Just hundreds of people walking the streets, just enjoying themselves. That's really what it's about, it's a holiday, have fun." said Houseknecht.

While this yard may be frightening on the outside, the Houseknecht's reason behind the display is simply sweet.

"There's too much bad stuff going on in the world today. Do something; you have to make people happy," explained Houseknecht.

And they found it necessary to let families experience all the tricks for free.

"People really can't afford what they used to anymore. Do you want to pay $75 to go to a haunted house?" added Houseknecht."Fun isn't only for the kids, right? So we want to have fun too. So we decorate, we enjoy it, we have fun."

If you dare, the Yorktown Haunt near Mountain Top will be open every night through November 3rd from dusk to 10 p.m.
