WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — In Luzerne County, just over a mile of road and 200 feet of elevation separates a Giants Despair Hillclimb mural at the bottom of East Northampton Street and a sign warning truckers to divert off Laurel Run Road to avoid the steep and winding descent ahead.
Within that roughly mile-long stretch, police officers responded to more than 40 car crashes between 2019 and September, according to an Action 16 review of state Department of Transportation and state police data.
Someone was hurt in 23 of those crashes, the data shows. Two people were killed there in that time frame.
A 24-year-old man died late last year when his tractor trailer rolled onto its side. In 2021, another person died when a pick-up collided with a cement truck.
