Getting homeowners ready for winter

Newswatch 16's Chelsea Strub talked to Scott Sharrow, the general manager of Driscoll's Home Center, about getting homeowners ready for winter.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — Breast cancer awareness, fire safety month, and Halloween are all in October.

These October observances are on display at Driscoll's Home Center in West Pittston, but what comes next is getting stocked on the shelves.

Scott Sharow, general manager of Driscoll’s Home Center, says, “You got Halloween, then you got Thanksgiving, then you got Christmas back-to-back-to-back.”

Sharrow says the change of the seasons brings many people to the store for many reasons.

Sharrow said, “They are looking for heating pellets. We're kind of that transition from summer to winter, and they want to keep the temperature up at night, heating pellets, heaters from space heaters to mini oil-filled heaters, just to take the chill out.”

Besides indoor heating needs, outdoor winterizing is also at the top of my mind.

“They'll be taking down their, uh, RV and recreational equipment. So, they'll come in, like, for an RV antifreeze, specifically for that long-term storage, better protection, down to, like, negative 50 degrees.” Sharrow explains.

As well as prepping for snow and ice.

“Trying to find that snow shovel that they bought last year, that, you know, the neighbor, they let the neighbor borrow and never got back. So now they're coming in looking to get ready. They're looking for like they have a snow shovel ready as the winter gets closer.” Sharrow said.

And avoid potential tragedy when it comes time to turn on a furnace.

Sharrow says, “Want to make sure you have a good carbon monoxide detector, because right now, if you start up your furnace and you don't have a good detection, and it's leaking carbon monoxide, it can be potentially fatal.”

Since it is fire safety month, Sharrow hopes homeowners will use this as a reminder to update their detectors and batteries.
