WILKES-BARRE -- School leaders at the Wilkes-Barre Area School District had to send crews over the weekend to Meyers High School, after part of its facade began crumbling.

"Very concerning because the children can get hurt at any moment," said Jonathan Adorno of Wilkes-Barre.

It's deteriorating so rapidly, some students and teachers were sent home early Friday.

"It does make me feel sad because I went to that school from seventh to 12th grade," said Sarah Hirthler of Wilkes-Barre.

The Meyers School building  is not up to code. So, the school board will have to decide whether to demolish it, rebuild it or renovate it. But some folks who talked to Newswatch 16 say they hope to see it stay.

Meyers High School Graduate Timothy Dillon said, "With the amount of taxes that people in this area pay, which is way higher than it should be, it could be repaired."

"They should at least take the effort to try to fix the school," added Adorno.

A state grant to fix the school buildings has a July 1, 2015 deadline. School leaders may decide what will become of Myers this month in an effort to take advantage of the grant.

If the district misses the deadline, it could mean millions of dollars for the school district building.
