WEST WYOMING, Luzerne County — While the remnants of tropical storm Debby may have left Northeastern and Central Pennsylvania, many are still dealing with the damage caused by the heavy rain and flooding.
Heavy rain from the remnants of Debby swept away the bridge connecting Bridget Harvey’s home to the main road.
Large debris from further upstream got caught in the drainage tube underneath the bridge, which caused a blockage.
“There was so much pressure behind it; it pushed out the tube, the guardrail, the I-beams, and everything with it and washed away my entire bridge,” Harvey said.
What's left is a 50-foot-wide ditch with debris from the bridge scattered along the creek, and the only way to get to Harvey’s house is a narrow footbridge.
"Friends have built this footbridge so we can at least get off and on if there's an emergency; friends built a parking spot for us; friends loaned their cars to us," Harvey said. “Just the outpour of love and support from the community is amazing to me."
While Harvey is unsure how to proceed with fixing the bridge, she said she’s hopeful she'll get help from the Departments of Transportation and Environmental Protection.
