Firehouse breakfast to relocate after decades

For decades, supporters of one fire department in the Back Mountain have come to one spot for monthly breakfasts. Sunday marked an end of sorts to the get together.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — One building along Route 415 in Lehman Township has been home to the Idetown Fire Department breakfasts for the last 65 years.

"This is a very important fundraiser for us. We do it once a month, the first Sunday of every month. It brings in a good amount of people. We see a lot of the community," said Gerry Walker, Idetown Fire Department Vice President.

The breakfast doesn't only draw in folks who live in the Back Mountain but people from all over northeastern and central Pennsylvania for many reasons.

"Food, it's very good. The company, we like to support the fire company. Most definitely," said Rosemary & Warren Cosner, Springville.

"Probably been coming here since they started. It's a good breakfast," said John Ryan, Wilkes-Barre.

After this breakfast the fire department will be bidding farewell to this location on Route 415.

"It's a bittersweet day for everybody. Everybody had a lot of memories here. Then, a lot of time here. We're moving on. We're moving on to a bigger location," said Walker. About three miles away at the former Lehman Volunteer Fire Company building off of Route 118 on Firehouse Road.

"Well, it's bittersweet. We've been here every month for a few years. So we just gotta move down the road a little further," said Rosemary.

"We are not joining forces with anybody. We are just moving into a new building. A little bit bigger than what's here. So we're going to continue to be Jonathan R Davis Idetown Fire Company, and that's what we're going to continue to do," said Walker.

While the department gets settled in its new location, there won't be a breakfast in the month of August. The next breakfast will be held at the new location in September.
