UPDATE: Home burns in Wilkes-Barre

Crews were called to the home along Frederick Street Saturday morning. The fire inspector said it was started by a space heater plugged into an extension cord.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — A home burned in Wilkes-Barre early Saturday.

Crews were called to Frederick Street in the city for a house fire around 6:45 a.m.

No one was home at the time.

The fire chief told Newswatch 16 that officials are unsure exactly how many people live there, so it's unclear how many are displaced.

Most of the damage was to the first and second floors of the home.

Firefighters were able to get the flames under control without injury.

A city fire inspector said the fire started accidentally from an electric space heater plugged into an extension cord and power strip.

Fire officials warn that space heaters should not be plugged into extension cords.
