LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — A father accused of involuntary manslaughter in the death of his 19-month-old daughter has been sentenced in Luzerne County.
James Kasisky, 27, was sentenced Thursday to time served and was released on parole.
Kasisky and Valentina Varela-Luis, the child's mother, were charged in March 2023.
Troopers say that in December of 2022, the pair never checked on their 19-month-old daughter in Newport Township for more than 24 hours. Court papers show that the child died after being left in a warm room with no food or water.
Kasisky pleaded guilty to involuntary manslaughter charges in March. Charges of endangering the welfare of children and reckless endangering were withdrawn.
Kasisky must continue with therapy, enroll in parenting classes, maintain full-time employment, and pay restitution to state police and the coroner's office.
Varela-Luis, 26, pleaded no contest earlier this month to two counts of recklessly endangering another person. Charges of involuntary manslaughter and endangering the welfare of children were withdrawn. She is awaiting sentencing.
