WILKES-BARRE -- The families of Hugo Selenski's murder victims finally had their chance to turn to him Friday and let loose their emotions and anger.
Emotions ran high inside the Luzerne County Courthouse, where Hugo Selinski was formally sentenced after his murder conviction last month. The judge sentenced Selenski to life in prison without the possibility of parole for killing Michael Kerkowski and Tammy Fassett in 2002.
Lisa Sands, the sister of Tammy Fassett, spoke at the sentencing.
"What he took from us can never be replaced. When we go to see her, we have to look at a headstone where his family can go to the jail to see him, which isn`t fair to us," Sands said.
On the stand, Sands directly asked Selenski why he killed her sister.
“I wanted him to answer my question: Why did he have to kill two people for drugs and money? Why? That`s the question I want to know, Why?” Sands said.
Geraldine Kerkowski is the mother of Michael Kerkowski. She says her black and white striped shirt was symbolic.
"I wore this outfit especially for him, so he remembers his will keep in jail," Kerkowski said.
The families say they'll never return to the Luzerne County Courthouse.
"I can now sleep at night without worrying about coming down here," Sands said.
The judge said Hugo Selenski will never walk in this community again.
Selenski has been sent to state prison.
