WILKES-BARRE TOWNSHIP, PA --Neighbors on Nicholson Street in Wilkes-Barre Township held one another close while police investigate why a woman in their apartment house was stabbed in the throat and killed.
Court papers show that police were called to the home Wednesday evening for a welfare check on 39-year-old Cindy Ashton.
Ashton was found dead in her bathroom.
"The neighborhood is going south. What's happening here, you know? Usually, it's peaceful, quiet, nobody gets irritated with anybody," said Charles Meehan.
"I wasn't here last night, I was in Ashley but I turned on the news this morning and I was shocked," said Mark Meehan.
Police are still looking for the killer.
They hope a search warrant for Ashton's cell phone leads them to some answers.
They believe Ashton may have had contact with a suspect before all of this happened.
In the meantime, neighbors have faith that police will solve the case.
"That's our township police department. They're pretty good guys," said Charles Meehan.
The district attorney's office says this was not a random act and there is no threat to the public.
