Businesses gutted by smoky fire in Edwardsville

The blaze in Luzerne County broke out in a commercial building on Main Street Thursday morning.

EDWARDSVILLE, Pa. — Crews from all over the Wyoming Valley were called out Thursday morning to battle a fire in Luzerne County.

Bystanders stood in awe as flames ripped through the building on Main Street in Edwardsville around 10 a.m. Thursday.

Smoke poured through the street and could be seen for miles, even in parts of Lackawanna County.

"I've been here for about 10 minutes. I live right up here. Unbelievable, God bless everybody," said one person watching as firefighters worked to control the blaze.

The building has housed Dancheck's fire extinguisher services for generations.

Workers inside said they smelled smoke, and by the time they got out, the building was completely engulfed.

Former employees came by to see what was happening.

"The owner was really nice, nothing bad to say," Zack Gramps said. "I feel terrible."

More than 75 firefighters from eight different departments across Luzerne County doused the businesses from every angle, working to put out the flames.

The departments had to bring in extra tankers to help with the water supply as they also battled low water pressure.

Inside Dancheck's, fire suppressant supplies exploded from the heat.

"There should be a lot. that's probably what you hear popping right now, the extinguishers. They're under pressure right now," Gramps said.

Kyle Reed watched as years of his hard work went up in flames.

"When I pulled up on scene, the amount of emotions that I watched ten years go up in flames in seconds. That's something no one is ever prepared for," Reed said.

While it's a difficult day for this business owner, he says he will rise from these ashes.

"Definitely a lot to process as of right now," Reed said. But, I've always had one rule my entire life growing up. You're allowed 24 hours. You're allowed 24 hours to be sappy or 24 hours to be happy. After that, the foot goes back on the gas, and after that, you get back to work."

No one was hurt.

There is no word on the cause of the fire.
