President Obama signed a bill Wednesday allowing federal correctional officers to carry pepper spray.
The bill comes from Pennsylvania Senators Pat Toomey and Bob Casey in an effort to protect officers following the murder of an officer in Wayne County.
Eric Williams was a correctional officer at the federal prison near Waymart.
Authorities say the man from Nanticoke was killed by an inmate in 2013 while on duty.
State lawmakers pushed for a bill to give correctional officers more protection.
Now, officers in medium to high-security federal prisons will be allowed to carry pepper spray.
