WILKES BARRE -- PennDOT crews have spent the past three days chipping away loose concrete from the South Street Bridge in Wilkes-Barre after people complained it was falling down.
People in the area say they've been dodging debris for months. PennDOT crews have been out inspecting the bridge, chiseling away loose pieces of concrete.
Residents like Olanda Carter say she`s relieved to see crews finally here.
"I`m so happy to see them repairing it. I feel a little safer." said Olanda Carter.
"Get it done and over with because it`s only going to keep deteriorating. Somebody is going to have a big accident," said Bruce Heppdang of Wilkes Barre.
PennDOT started getting calls in December about chunks of concrete falling from the South Street Bridge, but they needed a special piece of equipment to inspect the bridge and clear the debris.
"In order to do an inspection like this on a bridge like this, you have to have this specific piece of equipment. This crane here behind us that can reach underneath the bridge," said James May with PennDOT.
PennDOT insists the bridge is structurally sound, but believes the age of the bridge along with the rough winter weather have led to the falling debris. PennDOT adds doing this type of work removes the hazard for both drivers and pedestrians.
"There's no reports of concrete falling on cars or on people, so that's obviously the good news there. The reason that we are doing this now is to ensure in the future no concrete will be falling down." May added.
Crews were out on the bridge since Monday, and they're just about finished, but PennDOT will continue to revisit the site to ensure the is no hazard.
