Community shows support for Alexis Brown

A community in Luzerne County came together Sunday to show support for a 10-year-old girl who was struck by a car while she was walking to a neighborhood park.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — The sidewalks were barely wide enough to hold the crowd in Wyoming coming together for one of their own.

"We're having a walk for Alexis Brown," A 10-year-old girl in the Wyoming Area School District. "Who was unfortunately hit by a car while trying to go to the Butler Street Park. So we're kind of here to like to bring awareness to like the fact that not only happened like all the time like around like the country or even the world but to be here to help aid the cost of like whatever the hospital bills are for the family," said Lily Casa, Wyoming Area Senior.

Alexis' parents say she is being cared for at Geisinger near Danville after suffering a brain bleed that has since healed, a broken leg, and facial injuries.

"She was in surgery yesterday to correct her facial fractures, but she is recovering and doing really well," said Tanja Rivera, Alexis' mother.

While she continues to recover, the community in the Wyoming area wants her to know she has their support.

"You go on the news every single day, and you see stuff like this happen like it's just insane, like realizing okay like this happened in our own community, and we just wanted to do like something like anything we could to help the family out and show that like we do stand behind them. We are here for them," said Lily.

"We don't see that very often, so having the community come out do whatever they can for this little girl and her family, whether it's prayers, whether it's a financial contribution, it certainly is something that's going to help her heal," said Sgt. Stephen Bekanich, Wyoming Area Regional Police.

And it's an effort Alexis' mother says means the world, "And I'm so grateful to the community of Wyoming for being here and loving my family and my daughter and just being present. It means so much to us."

The American Grill of Exeter is hosting a giveback night, 'Alexis's Amigos" on June 12th and 13th, just mention Alexis when ordering dine-in or take-out.
