Clinic provides help with 'clean slate'

Pennsylvania's expanded Clean Slate Law was signed in December and took effect last month.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — A clinic in Luzerne County on Tuesday provided information on how to expunge or seal court records.

The event was held at Mohegan Pennsylvania in Plains Township.

Pennsylvania's expanded Clean Slate Law was signed in December and took effect last month.

This new law allows certain drug and property-related felonies to be sealed after ten years with no felony or misdemeanor conviction within that time period. Misdemeanor convictions can now be sealed if seven years pass with no conviction, and summary convictions can be sealed after five years.

Legal experts will be on hand to meet with those looking for help with cleaning up their records.

"After a person has made a mistake, paid their debt to society, done their time, paid their fines, they want to move on. They shouldn't be burdened by the weight of a criminal record that indeed is expungable or is sealable," said Scott Williams of North Penn Legal Services.

The free clinic was presented by the Educational Opportunity Centers of PA in partnership with North Penn Legal Services.
