Volunteers plant trees, clean up Nesbitt Park in Wilkes-Barre

Students and volunteers from all over Luzerne County cleaned up a park in Wilkes-Barre and planted a few trees ahead of Earth Day.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — It's not glamorous work, but these volunteers cleaning up Nesbitt Park in Wilkes-Barre say someone has to do it.

"We're definitely trying to help out and offer our support in picking up trash," said Isabelle Wells, Freeland.

"We're part of junior leadership. So obviously we all try to do a mission in our local community to help out a cause. And so when we got together, one thing we kind of all mutually cared about was helping our environment and our community," said Claire Griffin, Wyoming Seminary student.

These students teamed up with the Riverfront Parks Committee not only to clean up the park but also to plant seven new trees along the riverbank in honor of Earth Day, coming up later this month.

"Definitely better than some of the cleanups we've had over the last couple of years. So definitely something that's growing," said Rachael Stark, Riverfront Parks Committee.

"We're the park pioneers, and our mission is to help the environment in our local area. So what we're planning on doing is planting trees so that the bank of the Susquehanna River can be protected and to help the environment of the water, which will, in turn, help the natural habitat around the area," said Griffin.

Volunteers say doing something like this isn't only good for the environment but good for the soul, too.

"It feels good knowing that the area that you're residing in and that you're going to school for that. There that you're going to school for, you're giving back and helping the area that is doing good for you right now," said Giovanni Mazzola, Wilkes University student.

Volunteers also said this will get the park ready for all the events planned for this summer.
