Checking on Wilkes-Barre's flood protection

Firefighters and DPW crews checked out the city's flood walls on Monday morning.

WILKES-BARRE, Pa. — Wilkes-Barre firefighters and city workers spent part of Monday working on flood protection for the city.

Members of the Wilkes-Barre Fire Department and the DPW spent part of the morning practicing putting up the Brookside Levee flood wall in Wilkes-Barre.

The wall protects homes and businesses in the Brookside neighborhood when the Susquehanna River gets higher than 31 feet.

Fire Chief Jay Delany says this yearly exercise ensures that everyone is familiar with how it works.

"It's really labor intensive. It's like playing dominoes. And it's like a jigsaw puzzle to put everything together. So they're really good. They're all professional people. The new folks saw how it went together today, and I think it was really a huge success. We look at our strengths and weaknesses, and we'll build from there," the chief said.

According to the Army Corps of Engineers, the Brookside Levee flood wall protects 105 buildings in this part of Wilkes-Barre.
