Check It Out with Chelsea | Green Dog Barkery

Green Dog Barkery in Wyoming has a play and party area for dogs, a retail store, and a full-sized bakery dedicated to sweet treats for pups.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — There's no time to stop for pets when play time with pals is an option.

This indoor/outdoor play area is just one of the many things on the menu of things to do at the new Green Dog Barkery in Wyoming.

"It was really our daughter's inspiration. She was getting ready to graduate from college and we were talking about what she was going to do as a next step. And she said she really wanted to work with dogs. And we just got thinking, Well, how do you do that? How what could be fun about working with dogs," said Michele Pertl, co-owner of Green Dog Bakery.

The answers are endless, but playtime and shopping are on the list, too, as well as baking.

"So we use pretty much all human-grade ingredients. We can eat the treats; we have eaten the treats, and it's just a lot of care and time that goes into them. It's always developing new recipes to kind of keep up with trends and keep up with the seasons just to make it fun for the humans and fun for the dogs as well," said Madison PErtl, co-owner/manager, Green Dog Barkery.

The owners say the green in the title of the business promotes their prioritizing of local, natural ingredients like real bacon for sprinkles on frozen yogurt.

"All of our treats are made from scratch, just like you'd make your own chocolate chip cookies at home," said Michele.

So, while playtime continued at the party, we got started on the cake.

Followed by honey, vegetable oil, bananas, and carrots.

When it's finished, we cut the top off and save it for cake pops because this is not going to be an ordinary dog cake; it's going to be a tennis ball dog cake.

That takes some attention to detail with the cream cheese and honey icing that needs to be evenly spread and texturized with added details.

And a finishing touch for the party that often leads to the owner's favorite part of the day here at the bakery, "Just seeing all the dogs, honestly, just all the different happy faces and wagging tails," said Madison.
