Cancer Wellness Center of NEPA bringing comfort to those battling cancer this holiday

'Tis the season of giving, and a Luzerne County cancer support center is hoping to put a smile on the faces of those going through a devastating diagnosis.

LUZERNE COUNTY, Pa. — It's the season of giving, and Luzerne County Cancer Support Center is hoping to put a smile on the faces of those going through a devastating diagnosis.

The Cancer Wellness Center of NEPA - in Forty Fort has become a safe haven for those battling all types of cancer. Director Tom Ruskey says he and his staff welcome every single person who walks in the door.

"Nothing we do here is considered medical, but what we try to do is relieve the stress of going through this journey. So receiving things that you don't think of, things that keep you warm," he said.

Inside their welcome bags, the most simple items, that make the biggest impact for those going through their cancer journey. Patients like Dolphus Teart, who is in remission for double lung cancer.

"They definitely make me feel like family here. it's always the meet and greet with the big smiles, and I just light up when I come in this place," says Teart.

But, to be able to fill up those bags, the group is looking for donations. Comfort items like knitted hats, blankets, fuzzy socks, and chapstick top the list of needs. These items, just like all of their services, like acupuncture, massage therapy, and exercise classes, are completely free for cancer patients

"We meet people on the worst day of their lives. So, to see them go through this journey and to learn that they have support and there is a comfort there," added Ruskey.

The donations are a simple gesture, that's a symbol of care and compassion for those going through their biggest battles... giving the gift of hope this holiday.

"I just cannot say enough about the benefits that this provides to everybody that comes through this door. It is a blessing," added Teart.

All donations can be dropped off at the Cancer Wellness Center, formerly Candy's Place, in Forty Fort. People can also make monetary donations on the group's website
