A rooftop in Scranton is transformed into an oasis this Fourth of July.
Hilary Steinberg of Jaya Yoga has been putting on this holiday tradition for the past ten years, as hundreds of yogis come year after year to find their inner peace.
"It's very difficult to put into words the experience. The city is quiet because it's the holiday; there's a peace that isn't really attainable 9 to 5," said Steinberg.
The experience is enhanced by some of the most talented performers in the region. The Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic adds a soundtrack to the session.
"Both are good for the mind, body, and soul. Music is definitely good for the soul, as is yoga," said Carol Dembert, the Philharmonic's president.
Dembert says the donations from the event go a long way for their children's programming.
"The Philharmonic is enhancing school programs. As we know, programs for the arts, whether it's music or any of the other arts, are minimal at this point. So, we feel like we are really providing a special service for northeastern Pennsylvania," said Dembert.
Yoga and music are practiced together in harmony.
"Yoga is so similar. It is the movement of the body correlated with the breath, and in our own way, it creates our own personal symphony," said Steinberg.
The 11th annual Yoga on the Roof will take place rain or shine at 9 a.m. on Thursday, July 4, on the top of the Electric City Parking Garage on Penn Avenue. The suggested donation is $20 for the Philharmonic. Walk-in registration is accepted.
The NEPA Philharmonic will also be playing on July 3 at the Scrantastic Spectacular and in Wilkes-Barre on July 4.
