SCRANTON, Pa. — Hilary Steinberg calls it her Christmas in July. Next week, the rooftop above the Electric City Parking Garage will be filled with yogis of all ages.
"Filled. We get anywhere from 150-200 plus people. It's a pretty incredible experience. People come with their whole families; kids love it."
Steinberg owns Jaya Yoga in Clarks Summit. For the past ten years, she has begun her Fourth of July with Yoga on the Roof.
"There's something really special about doing it on a holiday weekend, too, because the city's got this really nice, lovely, peaceful quiet going on."
To add to the relaxing environment, musicians with the Northeastern Pennsylvania Philharmonic provide live music for the class.
The event also serves as a fundraiser for the Philharmonic's music education programs.
"The cost of putting on a concert, whether it's a mainstage, or a chamber concert, or a young people's concert, is far more than we can see by selling tickets. We need sponsorship, we need community support. And we're grateful because the Philharmonic has been a mainstay," board member Carol Dembert said.
You might be wondering—Why the Fourth of July?
"Fourth of July was kind of a happy accident. Carol and I were trying to figure out how to do this event, and it worked out that the Philharmonic has a huge performance the night before and the afternoon of the 4th. So, we thought, 'Oh, the musicians will be here, there's already awareness from the public.' So we put this together, and this is what we got!" Steinberg said.
Yoga on the Roof starts at 9 a.m. Tuesday on top of the Electric City Parking Garage on Penn Avenue. Registration is $15. You can register here.
