CARBONDALE, Pa. — An area war hero has died.
Carbondale native Capt. John "Jack" Race flew for the Air Force during World War II.
A Penn State graduate, he became highly decorated, being awarded the Bronze Star, among numerous other medals.
Out of the hundreds of missions Capt. Race flew, one stands out.
In 1945, he flew the highest-ranking German officer still alive to France to sign the surrender papers that ended the war in Europe.
Jack Race, an American hero, passes away at 101 years old.
