Volunteers and veterans sprucing up Scranton

Community groups in the city are working together on a beautification project called Scranton City Pride.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A place for veterans got a facelift Friday as part of a community beautification project.

Members of Scranton Tomorrow and Penn State Master Gardeners joined residents of the Gino J. Merli Veterans Center to help beautify the courtyard of the place in Scranton.

The project was part of Scranton City Pride, a joint project of Scranton Tomorrow, NeighborWorks Northeastern Pennsylvania, and United Neighborhood Centers of NEPA. It's a week of beautification, community development, and environmental programs throughout the city.

"They're coming over here to beautify our courtyard, which is wonderful. It adds color, it makes all of us old veterans just feel better," said veteran Harry Raybould.

"So happy, they're going to come out, and it's going to look so much brighter outside. They're going to be so happy," said volunteer Brenda Galeno.

Funding was provided by the American Water Charitable Foundation.
