New non-profit to give back to veterans in a unique way

Jacob Whitney of Lackawanna County started his new non-profit over the weekend and will make free raised garden beds in the spring for veterans.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — There's a newly started non-profit aimed at helping veterans in a unique way.

It's called "Victory Gardens for Vets."

Jacob Whitney of Covington Township comes from a military family. Both of his parents served, as did two of his siblings.

So, the Lackawanna County resident says doing this was an obvious choice.

“I have a strong belief in this country, and I want to give back to the veteran community,” said Whitney.

He will serve veterans in Northeastern Pennsylvania by building raised bed gardens for free.

"My dad and I started building raised bed gardens for ourselves and some members of our community a few years back, and this was sort of a natural extension given our values and our skills," said Whitney.

He kicked off the non-profit over the weekend and hopes to start building the gardens in the spring.

Whitney eventually hopes to partner with VA centers to reach as many veterans as possible.

"I'm really grateful to have this opportunity to help our veterans.  I think that what they've done for our country is amazing, and I think it's really important that we all give back,” Whitney said.

If you are a veteran in Northeastern Pennsylvania and would like one of these raised bed gardens, you can fill out a form here.
