CARBONDALE, Pa. — When you bowl three strikes in a row it's known as a "turkey". Valley Lanes near Carbondale is using that term a bit differently this weekend with a fundraiser they call the Turkey Toss.
"I thought it was the perfect opportunity when seeing a social media post about a turkey toss in a local supermarket, well I have a captive audience and the area to do a turkey toss so I brought it to the public," Cindy Grabowski of Valley Lanes said.
The second annual Turkey Toss is this Sunday at 3pm. For $5 and a nonperishable food item, you can throw a frozen turkey down the lane at Valley Lanes.
If you throw a strike you win a gift certificate for a turkey from ShopRite.
"I believe it was 20 turkeys that we gave away to the lucky people that were lucky enough to bowl strikes. More importantly we helped raise so much money for the food pantry," Chastity Black of ShopRite said.
All proceeds go to the Montdale Food Pantry.
"This event, the impact is incalculable and it is so appreciated," Barbara Taylor of Montdale Food Pantry said.
Last year's Turkey Toss raised $1,200 for the food pantry and helped feed around 400 families.
"We filled the backs of those SUVs with usable groceries. That was extraordinary. There were hundreds of dollars of groceries there and that makes a huge difference," Taylor said.
"These are the same people who kept our business going for the last seven decades, so I want to do things in my own community to help people who help us," Grabowski said.
The event will be on Sunday at Valley Bowling Lanes starting at 3pm.
