SCRANTON, Pa. — Officials are offering tips to keep people safe in ride-shares after a Lyft driver was accused of incapacitating and sexually assaulting a passenger on Tuesday.
"The biggest thing is just staying alert and paying attention to what's going on around you and that's really the best advice we can give is just keeping an eye out," said Bill Evans, State Police Public Information Officer.
Safety is a top concern for troopers in Wilkes-Barre, and every ride-share user should keep a watchful eye. However, some, like Kavan Huges in Lackawanna County, would rather avoid ride-share apps altogether.
"You never really know who you're getting in the car with, and I know just from experiences from apps like Doordash and things like that anybody can really sign up as long as they have a real ID," said Kavan Hughes of Clarks Summit.
While having an ID is a requirement for drivers, ride-share apps also look into driving records and criminal history, but Hughes says these companies can do more.
"Maybe a tracking system too that would alert emergency contact services if an Uber driver were to go off course," added Hughes.
Although many ride-share apps like Uber and Lyft don't immediately alert 911 if the driver goes off course, they do contact the rider to ensure their safety.
Along with GPS tracking, both apps allow the rider to connect with someone through the app if they feel unsafe. Uber connects with 911, and Lyft allows you to contact ADT security, who will reach out to authorities. Platforms also allow riders to get detailed information about their driver.
The ride-share companies also suggest riders check the license plate number and make and model of the car that's picking them up to make sure it matches the information in their app. They are also advised to share their location with a loved one and let them know when they're getting in a car.
