The hunt for missing jewelry in a corn pit

Lee Houser and his metal detector have been searching the corn pit at Lakeland Orchard and Cidery for a ring, but he's found much more in his search.

SCOTT TOWNSHIP, Pa. — The sound of a beeping metal detector replaced the sound of children inside the corn pit on Thursday at Lakeland Orchard and Cidery near Waverly.

Lee Houser likes to search for treasures but also helps people locate missing items. Houser was there because he got a call about a woman's missing ring last week.

"I found four rings but not the one I was looking for, a pendant and then some little flower thing, and I was shocked," said Houser.

Houser says he came back to search over the weekend and found more jewelry.

Employees at Lakeland Orchard say despite warning people, this happens a lot.

General Manager Jennifer Roba showed us a jar of lost items that they've accumulated.

"We have, on average, probably about five engagement rings that are lost in it a year. Some are found, some are not," said Roba.

Houser says he's searched plenty of property for items over the years, but a corn pit is a first, and it's proving to be a bit of a challenge.

"When you find something, and you try to reach down and get it, the corn just falls in on you, so a pinpointer helps out quite a bit," Houser said.

During this search, Houser found another ring, lost by an employee, as well as a pair of AirPods that were reunited with the owner before the end of the day.

"I'm glad people could get their valuables back. It makes me feel good," Houser said.

Houser says he's still on the hunt for the ring he came out to look for, but there's some hope if he doesn't find it.

"We do empty it at the end of the year and actually have some wedding bands that I think are left over from last year that we found," Roba said.

If any of the found jewelry or items look like ones you're missing and can show proof, you are encouraged to pick them up at the orchard.
