SCRANTON, Pa. — A judge found Amir Williams, 17, guilty of murder and other charges for the stabbing death of Tyler McKenna.
In June of last year, police swarmed a parking lot along West Olive Street in Scranton and found McKenna suffering from seven stab wounds. He was taken to a hospital, where he later died.
Police arrested Williams, along with two other juveniles. Williams was charged as an adult, and his case went to trial in front of a Lackawanna County judge.
The cases of the two other juveniles involved in the stabbing remain in juvenile court.
Lackawanna County District Attorney Mark Powell is pleased with the guilty verdict against Williams.
"Unfortunately, what we've been seeing lately are a lot of younger individuals committing serious crimes. We take that very seriously, and we'll charge them as adults, where appropriate, and we're happy the judge has delivered the correct verdict," Powell said.
Tyler McKenna's family was in court for the verdict. His mother, Kelly McKenna, says there is some relief after the judge's decision, but it doesn't bring back her son.
"My son loved to help people. He had a good heart and just wanted to make people happy, especially the ones he loved and cared for."
Williams' attorney declined to comment after the verdict.
Williams faces 35 years to life in prison. The judge has not scheduled a sentencing date.
