Taking in the new 'misfits' pop-up bar in Scranton

Newswatch 16's Nikki Krize checked out the new pop-up "misfits" bar in Scranton, where there is a place for everyone to hang out this holiday season.

SCRANTON, Pa. — A traditional holiday with eggnog, sweaters, and a yule log on the fire is great.

But that type of buttoned-up environment isn't suited for "misfits."

Fortunately, there's now a place where you can hang on the fringe of society.

Lackawanna College's 409 on Adams is getting a festive makeover.

"The pop-up concept kind-of started because it was becoming trendy in general and we wanted to try something new.  It's also a very different vibe and style than we're used to," Susan Markovich said.

Last year more than 10,000 people attended Lackawanna College's pop-up bars.  Misfits is a collaboration between hospitality students at Lackawanna College and Marywood University's School of Architecture.

"What does a culinary student get to learn about doing a pop-up?  And what do our students get to learn about what it takes to bring a menu and drinks to the immersive space they're making," Joshua Berman said.

Students are involved in every step of the process, such as coming up with ideas for the food and drink menus.

"Being able to price things and making sure you're meeting the right costs.  Managing staff, making schedules, it was really just an all-around good management experience," Allison Mayer said.

"Some of these walls I've painted and helped build, so I get this experience of how do these structures come together and have that new information in my head," Paige Stryshak said.

Proceeds from Misfits go to programs for the students.

Misfits will be open Wednesdays through Saturdays from 5-midnight and reservations will not be taken.

Misfits opens to the public tomorrow and runs through December 21st.
