LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — State police say a man faces charges for his role in the gunfire that ultimately led to the shooting of a Scranton police officer.
According to police, prior to the officer-involved shooting of Thursday morning, shots were fired late Wednesday night into homes on Harrison Avenue and Prospect Avenue.
Troopers confirmed multiple people had been brought to the state police barracks in Dunmore for questioning.
Jeremiah Cleveland, 19, from Mayfield, was charged with gun and reckless endangerment charges in connection with the gunfire from Wednesday night.
Troopers believe Cleveland was with the gunman who shot the officer around 5 a.m. along Sweatland Street between North Main Avenue and North Hyde Park Avenue in West Scranton.
The suspect was then shot by another police officer, according to investigators.
State police say the violence was gang-related.
"What we are seeing is gang infiltration in Lackawanna County, not in Lackawanna County in general, but throughout the state of Pennsylvania, " said Trooper Robert Urban of the Pennsylvania State Police. "The individual tonight associated with these gangs was involved in drive-by shootings that happened previously before the incident of the officer-involved shooting occurred."
Troopers have not released the name of the wounded officer or the other suspect. Both remain hospitalized tonight at Geisinger Community Medical Center in Scranton.
