SCRANTON, Pa. — It was all about STEM, not sports, in the gymnasium at Lackawanna College in Scranton.
Students from eight school districts had the opportunity to check out the college's programs in science, technology, engineering, and math, including robotics, medical professions, and culinary arts.
"Entry-level jobs with a good salary, and they're all two-year programs, so it's going to save them on student loans and college expenses, and they can get out into the workforce," said Abbey Judge, an administrator at Lackawanna College.
Students from grade 8 to grade 12 were welcome to speak to current students and faculty in these growing fields.
"Maybe medical, there's also cooking classes over there, or like what they're demonstrating in general. I'm interested in those ideas. They also have an esports team. I didn't know colleges do Esports," said Andrew Husisian, a sophomore at Abington Heights.
Adriana Sandy is a current student at Lackawanna College and wishes she had this opportunity when she was in high school. She is glad to have the opportunity to encourage students to enroll in STEM-related programs.
"It helps me understand more about ultrasound, experience it more, talk about my love for it, and get other people interested in it because I just think it's a great field," Sandy said.
There was also a financial learning portion of the day, where students chose a career and had to manage a budget based on that job's average salary.
"We give them all the different expenses that they might encounter in life, some unexpected expenses, and we want them to be able to come within their monthly budget," Sandy said.
Lackawanna College hosts a similar event for students in the fall.
