SCRANTON, Pa. — The printing machine at Jaworski Sign Company in Scranton was buzzing, making a batch of signs with 'SPD Strong.' Amanda Jaworski says it's all hands on deck to print out 500 of these yard signs, ordered by the Scranton Dunmore Fraternal Order of Police Lodge. The signs will be sold to raise money for Detective Kyle Gilmartin, who was shot last week in the city's west side.
"We wanted to make sure that we got these signs out quick for them. That way, they can take on this fundraiser and get as much help as fast as they possibly could," said Jaworski.
The crew at Jaworski Sign Company is working overtime, but when the call came to help, Jaworski said, of course, the answer was yes.
"We're all here to support each other and help each other out. The bigger picture is it doesn't really matter how much it takes," Jaworski said.
As fast as the signs were made, they were flying out the door at the Scranton Dunmore FOP Lodge on Railroad Avenue.
"I picked up four signs, some for myself, one for a neighbor, one for a friend."
Kristen Wesley said it's important to show support for the Scranton Police to give Detective Gilmartin the strength to recover.
"I stopped at the police station earlier and picked up some t-shirts as well. Whether it's a GoFundMe, cupcakes, anything to show support for the people that protect us," Wesley said.
FOP Lodge President Justin Butler says each and every fundraiser has exceeded expectations.
"From selling Texas wieners to crab legs, everything throughout the city and outside the city. My phone hasn't stopped ringing. People just want to keep showing their support for Kyle. It's just tremendous to see this outpouring of support for a police officer," said Butler.
The FOP Lodge will re-open its doors again Friday at 10 a.m. to continue selling the signs until this batch is gone. If needed, another order for more signs will be placed.
