Social media post adds to growing concern over building condition at Lackawanna County park

The bath house at Merli-Sarnoski Park is showing its age after being dedicated back in 1978.

LACKAWANNA COUNTY, Pa. — From flaking paint to missing siding, concerns are growing over the shape of the bath house at Merli-Sarnoski Park near Carbondale.

"Bathroom would be the place to start. There's some rotting wood on the outside," said Roseann Bartholomeo of Carbondale.

Dedicated back in 1978, the county-owned property in Fell Township is starting to show its age.

County officials aren't the only ones who have noticed the building here is in need of an upgrade.

Newswatch 16's morning meteorologist Joe Snedeker posted pictures on Facebook of the building that then gained a lot of traction.

"The park is so beautiful. Um, it's one of the really the jewels of Lackawanna County, but the bathhouse is a disaster," said Lackawanna County Commissioner Bill Gaughan.

County Commissioner Gaughan took a tour of the park earlier this year and says the county is planning a fix.

"The entire structure has to be replaced," said Gaughan. "We're working on a plan now to do that."

"You have a lot of people coming up here, you have church groups with kids, you got the summertime kids that come up, then of course, somebody like me, an adult that just likes to sit and look around," said Bartholomeo. "It will be very beneficial."

Bartholomeo says the upgrades will only add to the park's natural beauty that she already enjoys.

"God has created beautiful scenery for me to see," said Bartholomeo.

County officials hope to have a plan in place for the upgrades at Merli-Sarnoski Park sometime next year.
