PENNSYLVANIA, USA — We know northeastern and central Pennsylvania take St. Patrick's Day seriously, but just how Irish is our area?
Data from the United States Census Bureau shows those Irish roots run deep.
It's no surprise Lackawanna County takes home the big potato. Home to the Scranton St. Patrick's Parade—one of the largest and oldest celebrations of Irish heritage in the nation—a whopping 25% of residents here lay claim to Irish ancestry, the highest percentage in the commonwealth.
Coming in at number four is Pike County, which boasts a 22.8% population of Irish ancestors. Not too shabby to make it on that four-leaf clover.
Susquehanna County gets bragging rights with 20.3% of its population able to trace their family back to Ireland. That makes it the 6th-most Irish county in Pennsylvania.
Overall, about 15.2% of people living in the Keystone State can say they have some connection to the Emerald Isle.
