Girls' tennis team from Scranton Prep celebrating state championship title

It was a morning filled with purple and gold, with an emphasis on gold. Scranton Prep celebrated its state-champion girls' tennis team.

SCRANTON, Pa. — t was a gold medal morning for Scranton Prep—a gym filled with students and filled with pride.

The school's girls' tennis team captured the PIAA 2A state championship over the weekend in Hershey.

Nora Kulicki is one of the co-captains and said the young ladies really are a team.

"Tennis is very inherently an individual sport with singles and doubles, but we celebrate like, a win for one of us is a win for all."

Kulicki added all their hard work paid off with that state title, and the individuals all pulling in the same direction was a major factor.

Valerie Werhun is the other co-captain. She saw championship potential beginning with those late summer practices.

"Our teammates just aren't playing for themselves. They're playing for each other, so it's great to see that on and off the court."

Werhun went on to call that championship season "amazing."

There are eleven girls on the Scranton Prep team, with only two seniors, so Head Coach Kendra Croker feels there is a good chance they will be right back here for another celebration next year.

The number of returning players gives Prep an advantage going into the 2024 season. Plus, they know how to win and know how to believe in themselves.

"I told the girls from the first practice in August that we could win the state championship, and it was up to them to believe that. As the season went on, they started to believe it little by little," Croker said.

And the belief ended with the big trophy. This is the first girls' team championship in Prep's history.
